Topic: connection between Charles Lindberg and Thad Johnson
Can you please tell me of the connection between Charles Lindberg and Thad Johnson of Canada? Thanks. Ian
After returning to the United States from his famous NY to Paris flight, Charles Lindbergh visited Ottawa. Lt. Thad Johnson's pursuit plane was part of a twelve-plane escort which had accompanied Lindbergh and the Spirit of St. Louis from Selfridge Field, Michigan to Ottawa. The tail was cut off of Lt. Johnson's pursuit plane in a mid-air collision.
Here’s the official report:
On July 2, 1927 Twelve P-1 airplanes under command of Major Thomas G. Lanphier, Air Corps, proceeded from Selfridge Field to Ottawa, Canada, acting as Special Escort for Colonel Lindbergh, who was to attend at the opening of the Dominion Jubilee. First Lieutenant J. Thad Johnson, Air Corps, commanding 27th Pursuit Squadron, was killed in an unsuccessful parachute jump after collision with another plane of formation in demonstration on arrival over Ottawa.
